In the newly-published English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017 Edition),the quality of thinking is included as an independent dimension into the key competencies of English subjects for the first time.Developing and cultivating students’ thinking quality is beneficial to improve their ability to analyze and solve problems.It enables them to get a cross-cultural perspective when observing and understanding the world.It also helps students make correct value judgments on things,and promotes their deep learning.Therefore,the cultivation and development of thinking quality has attracted more and more researchers’ attention.The senior high stage is the key stage in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality,so it is of great significance to explore the current situation of students’ thinking quality cultivation in English teaching in senior high schools.In order to explore the current situation of senior high school students’ thinking quality cultivation in Tianjin,find out the factors that affect high school students’ thinking quality and provide practical suggestions,the investigation has been done.Three research questions are expected to be explored:1.What is the current situation of senior high school students’ thinking quality in logicality,criticalness and creativity?2.Is there gender difference in thinking quality?3.What factors affect the development of students’ thinking quality?This study takes 240 students from a senior high school in Tianjin as the research subjects.Questionnaires are applied to investigate and study the current situation of senior high school students’ thinking quality,aiming to explore the current situation of students’ thinking quality and the gender differences in thinking quality through their performance in logicality,criticalness and creativity of thinking.The factors that affect the cultivation of thinking quality are explored through teacher’s interview and students’ interview.Through the analysis of the data,the author draws the following conclusions.Firstly,it is found that the thinking quality of high school students is still at an intermediate level,and the logicality of students’ thinking is relatively well cultivated,while the criticalness and creativity of thinking still needs to be further cultivated.There is still much room for the improvement in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality.Secondly,there is no significant gender difference in thinking quality.Thirdly,the factors affecting the cultivation of thinking quality mainly include teachers and students.Teacher factors include the great pressure from teaching tasks and examinations and teachers’ inadequate professional ability in cultivating thinking quality,etc.Student factors include students’ inadequate understanding of thinking quality,laziness in thinking,and restrictions on thinking quality by English proficiency.Also,the author found some problems.For example,students have a low level of creative thinking,lacking of creativity,and teachers’ teaching mainly focuses on language knowledge and content.According to the current situation and affecting factors of high school students’ thinking quality cultivation,this paper puts forward some suggestions to help improve the cultivation of students’ thinking quality and improve students’ comprehensive English abilities and key competencies. |
