Core literacy is a hot topic that the whole society is currently concerned about.The newly released "English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)" by the Ministry of Education has elaborated on the connotation and leading role of core literacy in the English subject.As one of the cultivation goals of English core literacy,thinking quality plays a crucial role.However,due to the influence of traditional exam-oriented education,the cultivation of thinking quality in English is often neglected.Therefore,based on the theory of language and thinking relationship and Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive educational goals,this thesis focuses on English reading instruction in elementary schools,and investigates the current situation of English thinking quality cultivation among 281 fifth-grade students and5 English teachers in S Primary School in Y city by adopting questionnaire survey,classroom observation,and interview methods.Firstly,through student questionnaires and classroom observation scales,the current situation of students’ English thinking quality cultivation is understood from three aspects: logical thinking,dialectical thinking,and innovative thinking.Secondly,through teacher interviews,the awareness,methods,and problems in the process of cultivating students’ English thinking quality are investigated,and finally,the strategies for cultivating thinking quality are proposed.This thesis focuses on the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of cultivating students’ logical thinking,dialectical thinking,and innovative thinking in English reading teaching in primary schools?(2)What are the problems that teachers face in cultivating students’ English thinking quality in primary school English reading teaching? What are the reasons for these problems?(3)How can teachers better cultivate students’ English thinking quality in English reading teaching in primary schools?This thesis finds that the cultivation of English thinking quality among fifth-grade students in S Primary School is at a moderate level.Teachers have the most solid cultivation of students’ logical thinking,and the cultivation of dialectical thinking and innovative thinking need to be improved.However,due to insufficient understanding of thinking quality cultivation,teachers do not pay enough attention to the cultivation of English thinking quality.Based on the above survey results,the author proposes several strategies from the teacher’s perspective to cultivate the overall English thinking quality of students:actively participate in teaching training and update teaching concepts;respect individual differences of students and optimize teaching goals;strengthen curriculum resource development and integrate teaching content;pay attention to classroom interactive communication and innovate teaching methods;promote the integration of teaching and evaluation,and broaden the scope of teaching evaluation.In addition,the author also proposes specific cultivation strategies corresponding to the three dimensions of thinking quality.Teachers can cultivate students’ logical thinking by deeply excavating the content of discourse,cultivate students’ dialectical thinking by reasonably creating teaching situations,and cultivate students’ innovative thinking by appropriately extending English classroom teaching.
