Michael Ondaatje is a famous contemporary Canadian writer.Because of the author's rich experience of transnational growth, his literary writing races around the world, from the Italian country house destroyed by World War II to Sri Lanka, which is experiencing endless war,or Toronto,a representative city that gradually formed a pluralistic civilization pattern after the war. While containing a large number of exotic descriptions,Ondaatje always takes care of the war-torn bottom people with humanitarian noble feelings. He left Sri Lanka, showing a hopeful picture of pluralistic civilization gradually moving towards communication and integration in the eyes of contemporary writers. In the stereotype of many military rulers and war initiators, the pace of human beings will develop linearly with the progress of society, science and technology. However,in Ondaatje's view, the progressiveness and consistency of traditional history and its future-oriented ideology have proved to be dangerous ideas. The author breaks down linear history into pieces, and links similar fragments of war history-medieval war and World War II.Through the practice of historical juxtaposition,he reveals the bloody and fractured social development process and arouses people's attention to the past. Moreover,Ondaatje also exposed the suffering and division beyond the glorious history and grand war narrative. The author regarded the marginalized ordinary people as the historical subjects, and filled the historical gap in their rejection and resistance to the official history. At the same time, the author also actively speaks out for the innocent souls who have lost their right of speech forever.Only under the dual care of medical assistance and spiritual home reconstruction can the indelible pain brought by war be cured. In addition to showing the multiple relations between war and history,Ondaatje's novels even satirize and reflect on the political position of war infiltration by innuendo.Unlike many writers' sharp writing style,Ondaatje's ambiguous narrative position often makes him fall into critics' criticism. In fact,it is not difficult to find that the vague political attitude in the gray area is more conducive to showing a variety of cultural forms outside the mainstream Western discourse and prompting readers to reflect on the cultural invasion behind the war.Ondaatje exposed and reflected on this phenomenon with the help of narrative perspective outside the home country.By defending universal human rights and in the proper name of geographical investigation, countries with sovereign discourse represented by the West took an opportunity to plunder territory, and tried to occupy countries in a weak position subtly from the ideological level.Tracing back to the causes of war and conflict,we can dig out various roots from the aspects of economy, politics and natural resources. In his novels,Ondaatje focuses on the narrow perspective brought by the boundary between nation and home country.Negative nationalism will lead people to be forced to take sides, and the multicultural integration of different nationalities is difficult to be properly handled. At this moment, people have to think in a brand-new way about today's world with increasingly diversified cultures. In the villa San Girolamo,we can appreciate a spiritual picture of people healing themselves and searching for their homes at the end of World War II.The war made them riddled with holes. They tried to erase national boundaries, transcend nationalities and make up for their wounds with love. However,in the context of frequent world wars and the supremacy of national interests, their efforts inevitably failed. On the one hand,Ondaatje borrowed the reality of war,and on the other hand, integrated the individual's life situation and post-war reflection, and wrote about his concern about the cross-border of identity and culture as an immigrant writer. The trauma and spiritual self-help resistance suffered by the heroes under the siege of war also provide a possibility for people all over the world to seriously wait and see and explore. In the ruins of the world after the war, this means an era of spiritual annihilation, and it is also an era of awakening.
