A Study Of The Metaphor Translation Strategies Of National Defense Discourse From The Perspective Of Palmer’s Cultural Linguistics

In 1996,Palmer,an American linguistic anthropologist,first combined the three traditions of linguistic anthropology,namely boas linguistics,national semantics and discourse folklore,with cognitive linguistics.On the basis of cognitive linguistics,he brought cultural factors into the scope of study and put forward the famous concept of "cultural linguistics".It also puts culture,cognition and language at the core of its research so as to provide some theoretical guidance for the language phenomena involving culture.The exchange and contest of national defense discourse reflect and promote the specific relationship between countries,and affect the security situation of the world today.Therefore,all countries have set up specialized agencies to be responsible for the publicity film of national defense discourse,and to publish the discourse materials in various languages.PLA TODAY is a representative work of China’s national defense discourse.It is of great significance that its translation research conforms to the requirements of the times.This thesis takes cultural linguistics as the theoretical foundation,and according to Palmer’s cultural linguistics theory on the relationship between metaphor,culture and image,it adopts a combination of literature reading,qualitative and quantitative research,to study the metaphor translation strategy of the subtitles of the PLA TODAY series.First of all,this thesis,using the sampling method and the metaphor identification procedure,makes qualitative or descriptive analysis of the selected sentence in the subtitles;Secondly,it classifies and analyzes the metaphorical images in the subtitle translation of the series,and finds out the relationship among metaphor,culture and image;Finally,five metaphorical image translation strategies are summarized:wholly keeping metaphorical images,partially keeping metaphorical images,converting metaphorical images,omitting metaphorical images,and explaining metaphorical images.The results of the study show that the relationship between metaphor,culture and image in Palmer’s cultural linguistics has a strong explanatory power for the research on the subtitle metaphor translation strategy of PLA TODAY.The thesis tentatively proposes the strategies of metaphor translation,hoping to provide reference for the English translation of national defense publicity films.
