Nowadays American movies are becoming increasingly popular in China. Because this is a good choice to know about their culture for the people who cannot actually go abroad. The movie fans prefer the American movies that come with the English language and Chinese subtitles, not only because it can give the audience the"original"effect of the movie, but also it is a good way for them to learn the English language. Because of the unique characteristics of the film language and film translation, the translators may confront with some constraints while doing the translation. Furthermore, audience do get different impression from the film with different versions of translation, so the film subtitle translation is becoming more and more important and more researches on how to complete this important work keep coming up. In 2008, Hollywood movie Kung Fu Panda, which chose the Chinese panda image and Chinese Kung Fu as its theme, was really a successful movie. It has many different versions of Chinese subtitle translations, each gives the different effects to the audience. By comparative analysis of them, we can clearly see how important it is to present the image from one culture to another culture in the film subtitle translation.This thesis, based on Palmer's Culrtural Linguistics Theory and its image concept, gives an introduction to the film language and subtitle translation, including their definitions, characteristics, categories and constraints, studies the image translation in three different versions of Chinese subtitle translation in Kung Fu Panda from several aspects such as shared image and culture-specific image, image translation using the Kung Fu terms, image translation to achieve the humorous effect, and then draws a conclusion on the implications on the image translation in Chinese subtitles, expounds the significance and ways of image translation, hoping that this can help the future study in the fields of film subtitle translation.
