In 1996, in order to arouse the interest of linguistic anthropologists in cultural image,American anthropologist Palmer proposed to apply cognitive linguistics to cultural studies, and he further pointed out the core method of three branches of traditional linguistic anthropology, namely Boas linguistics, ethnosemantics as well as Ethnography of Speaking can be combined with cognitive linguistics, and he finally put forward the construction ideas of cultural linguistics. Palmer's cultural linguistics is a theory of language and culture, integrating the study of language, culture and image with image as its core concept. Langauge is the carrier of the image and image is decided by culture.Poetry is the essence of the cultural treasure house, and image is the soul of poetry, the spirit of the art of poetry.Image is not only the basis of understanding language, but also contains rich and profound cultural connotation.Because of its high ideological, artistic and cultural value, Mao Zedong's poetry has a prominent position in the history of Chinese poetry and enjoys a high praise, which have a wide and profound influence in the world. There are a large number of images inMao Zedong's poems, including ecological images, allusion images, social images and linguistic images, which are full of distinctive local features during the Chinese revolution, so the present study is of reference function and guiding significance to the translation of poetic image.Based on the four principles of perceptual equivalence, spacial equivalence, structural equivalenceand transformational equivalence for image in Palmer's cultural linguistics and with Xu Yuanchong's translation version of Mao Zedong's Poems as the study object, the author uses qualitative and descriptive methods and classifies the images, attempting to find the close relationship among language, culture and image and exploring the translation effect of the images in Mao Zedong's poemsand summarizes four strategies for image translation under the four equivalence principles. The research result shows that Palmer's four equivalence principles have a strong explanatory power for image translation in Mao Zedong's Poems and that the translator should follow the equivalence principles in an exquisite and appropriate way on the basis of a full understanding of the original language and culture. Also, the author attempts to summarize the strategies for image translation, hoping to shed light on, and to better promote, the spread of traditional Chinese culture.
