| This is a translation practice report based on the translation of青山鉴(Qing Shan Jian),a Huangmei Opera telling the story of university graduates Zhang Lanlan and Zhou Lifan dedicating their youth and sweat to the vision of a beautiful countryside in their start-up of a free farm. The drama text is loaded with Chinese proper names, allusions, idioms, proverbs and other allegorical sayings and many Anqing dialects are also involved. The translator attempts to address the issue of cultural default with the help of Gutt’s relevance translation theory.According to Gutt,“A translation would be a receptor language text that interpretively resembled the original.” Following the principle of “Relevance taken as the criterion, adaptation as the means and intention as the destination, the translation should be as similar as possible to the original text”,this practice report is aimed at bridging the difference between the original author’s intention and the target text recipient’s expectation. One innovation is to introduce the concept of communicative clues as the criterion when preserving the “style” of the source text and for cultural default compensation.During the translation, the translator developed a better understanding of maxiamal relevance and optimal relevance and find it feasible to integrate the two in the same framework.Translation of drama texts should first achieve optimal relevance. In this process, equivalence of sound, form and meaning are partly attained by a selection of phonetic, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic communicative clues. Then, the translation should be as cost-efficient in expression as possible to meet the requirement of performance and achieve maximal relevance. The report consists of five parts.Chapter One is project introduction which introduces the source of the text, the value and significance, text analysis and report structure.Chapter Two is process description which includes pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter Three illustrates the adaptability of Gutt’s relevance translation theory in dealing with cultural default.Chapter Four is case analysis.Chapter Five is conclusion part. |
