| This is a report on the translation of five news features about 2020 China International Fair for Trade in Services(2020 CIFTIS)selected from the Xinhua News Network. The fair, being China’s first major international economic and trade event held offline since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, was of great significance in promoting international exchanges and in accelerating the recovery of the world economy. In the news features,a large number of rhetorical devices are used, such as parallelism, antitheses and metaphors, which have not only improved the readability of the news report but also achieved better rhetoric effects. And the translation of the metaphors is the focus of this report. In the cognitive view, metaphor is a fundamental mode of cognition, and the construction of the image involved is based on both human experience and encyclopedic knowledge. The metaphorical images may vary from culture to culture. Therefore,to understand the implied meaning of a metaphor in a specific context is the first task of translation. In addition, because of the differences between the Chinese and Western cultures, the translator needs to decide if the intended meaning can be represented in the target language.Under the guidance of relevance theory, the report explores the relevance between the context of the source text and the target readers’ cognitive context in the case study, and proposes three solutions to deal with the metaphor translation, namely, retaining and replacing the metaphorical images of the original texts and using free translation without the original image. The aim is to create optimal relevance and to enable the target readers to make least cognitive effort to attain the understanding of the implications of the metaphors,so that the best contextual effect of the source texts can be achieved in the translated texts. |
