Educational globalization is inevitable, and the inclusion and diversity of higher education have become an important trend in the development of higher education in various countries. At present,China is striving to be an influential country in education.Learning the experience and practice of educators in western developed countries plays an important role in the reform of higher education in China. Therefore, the translator chose a social science text of higher education as the translation task.Diversity and Inclusion in Global Higher Education published by Palgrave Macmillan Company in 2020 introduces the concepts and related knowledge of diversity and inclusion in higher education.Up to now,no corresponding Chinese version has been found, and its translation and introduction may help promote the further development of Chinese higher education in this aspect. In this practice, the first and second chapters of this book were selected as the specific translation tasks, guided by Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to explore the application strategies of this theory in vocabulary, syntax and text translation and summarize the operation methods of translation in social science texts with education as the theme. In the process of translation practice, the translator followed Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and achieved the minimum requirements of functional equivalence from three perspectives: lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence. At the level of lexical equivalence, translators mainly used such techniques as idiom application, flexible translation of words and conversion of word classes. While at the level of sentences, she used such techniques as voice transformation, reorganization of long and difficult sentences and translation of sentences in reverse order. And at the level of texts, she used such techniques as ellipsis and substitution.By using the above strategies, the translator helped readers of the target language to get as similar responses as readers of the source language. The practice results show that Nida’s "Functional Equivalence" theory is of much help to the translation of this educational social science text, and can provide some reference for the translation practice and research of educational texts in the future. |
