Abstract/Summary:
Pre-task preparation is the first step and also an indispensable part of an interpreting task.Adequate pre-task preparation is also the guarantee of high-quality interpretation. This report is based on the two-way consecutive interpreting service that the author provided for the Business Investment and Tourism Promotion Forum of Cambodia at the 16 th China-ASEAN Expo(CAEXPO)and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit(CABIS).In this report, the emphasis is laid on the interpreter’s pre-task preparation for the service and its influence on the interpreting quality.A case study is conducted in the light of schema theory,a key concept in psychology and cognitive linguistics, which is also widely applied in foreign language comprehension and listening.According to schema theory, people dealing with novel knowledge tend to associate it with existing knowledge acquired from the past, thus generating new comprehension.Through case analysis, this report will illustrate three types of schemata that facilitate pre-task preparation, namely, linguistic schema, content schema, and formal schema, and their influences on the interpreting quality in two aspects, namely, anticipation and comprehension.Given these three schemata, the author puts forward several suggestions on pre-task preparation from the long-term and short-term perspectives. It is expected that this report will help practitioners cope with difficulties occurring in future tasks.
