Interpreting plays an increasingly important role in academic communication and technology exchange.High-quality interpreting requires extraordinary abilities of listening,information-processing,expressing and attention splitting etc.Since the limitation of energy allocation, sufficient and proper preparation can remarkably improve the consecutive interpreting performance.Pre-task preparation is crucial to all attenders including the interpreter, the speaker, the audiences and the organizer. However, the fact is often neglected. The case in this report is based on a consecutive interpreting for the People’s Hospital of Jiangmen. The author was responsible for interpreting the training lecture on spinal surgery for German expert Daniel Rosenthal from English to Chinese.Based on Daniel Gile’s Processing Capacity Model, the author analyzes the importance of pre-task preparation and learns lessons for better performance next time. This report studies the influence of pre-task preparation from two sides including the interpreter and the organizer,on the quality of interpreting output.Based on the experience, the author hopes to improve her preparation skills and applies them into practice in the future. This report mainly consists of five parts: task description, theoretical framework, process description, case analysis and conclusion.First, the author describes task requirements and the interpreter’s qualification. The second part introduces the theoretical framework of the Processing Capability Model including all elements in the model and how they influence interpreter’s comprehension. The third part introduces the process of pre-task preparation and interpreting performance, including problems and solutions in preparation phase. The fourth part is case analysis,in which the author assesses her output on three aspects: accuracy, integrity and fluency and classifies problems in output into three dimensions: language knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge and analysis ability to provide suggestions for increasing interpreting quality. The last part is conclusion which summarizes current discoveries and limitations, trying to provide suggestions for practice in the future.Based on her practice, the author believes that the organizer needs to cooperate with interpreters with adequate communication and provide detailed information as much as possible. And except language knowledge, the interpreter should develop their extra-linguistic knowledge and improve analytical ability to achieve high-quality output.
