Taking the interpreting tasks as examples that the author completed during the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding on the Ningxia-Israel Demonstration Irrigation Farm, the paper discusses the effect of pre-interpreting preparation (PIP) on the quality of interpreting based on Danial Gile’s effort model for consecutive interpreting. PIP here in the current paper refers to theme-based preparation instead of preparation simply for the expression of terminologies and technical words in the target language. PIP is facilitating the comprehension of the interpreter. Though comprehension is not directly reflected in the effort model, it affects the capacity for each of the efforts including listening and analysis, note-taking, memory and coordination. Since the available capacity is relatively increased, and the whole process becomes less stressful for the interpreter and the quality of the interpretation is therefore improved.Through the analysis of interpreting practices, the author has found that significant improvement has been made in listening comprehension, memory and note-taking, expression after the PIP work is done. Based on the interpreting experiences, the author proposes some feasible strategies in Pre-interpreting Preparation as well as some emergency tactics to deal with the problems caused by insufficient pre-interpreting preparation. It is hoped that all interpreters can have awareness and competence of PIP.
