| This article is a translation practical report on English-Chinese translation.The selected materials are six scientific and technological articles from Popular Science,which cover genetic engineering,artificial intelligence,medical development,virtual reality technology,mental health,solar road technology and so on.For more than 130 years,in terms of improving people’s life quality and technology knowledge,the magazines published by Popular Science and articles on its official website have played a pivotal role.The language of the texts is rigorous and standardized,and there are many long and difficult sentences.Scientific and Technological English text(EST)is a kind of pragmatic text and its main purpose is to convey information.Therefore,when translating EST,it is extremely important for translators to transfer textual information clearly and accurately.In the 21 st century,if we still rely on traditional theories to guide the translation of modern scientific English,we may not meet the requirements of the development of modern information technology.And the target articles won’t be practical and interesting enough to be accepted by most of the readers.The theory of variation translation proposed by Huang Zhonglian is suitable for EST translation,because variation translation is based on the special needs of specific readers under certain circumstance.It uses adaption methods such as amplification,deletion,edition,narration,condensation,combination and rewriting.Therefore,the author uses the theory of variation translation to guide the practice of EST translation and analyzes seven appropriate translation methods with detailed examples.However,variation is not arbitrary.The translator needs to give full play to his subjective initiative to translate articles.Therefore,the seven methods of variation are of practical significance to EST translation.In addition,the author hopes to improve my translation ability and scientific literacy and provide certain reference and help for EST translation in the future through this translation practice. |
