| The Duan Clan of Wusheng in Sichuan was an immigrant clan who moved from Qiyang in Hunan to Dingyuan in Sichuan(now Wusheng in Sichuan)in the 36 th year of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty(1697)during the Immigration from Huguang to Sichuan movement.During the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the Duan clan took about 200 years to grow into a prominent local clan which had a certain influence on the local politics, economy and society. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, but with the great social change and rapid decline. From the perspective of clan and local society, this paper carries out the research combining literature, genealogy and field investigation, and combines the changes of local social environment with the internal reasons of family development such as economy, education and social communication,so as to explore the ups and downs of the Duan clan.As a local clan with certain power, the Duan clan rose in the local disturbances of the White Lotus rebellion and Li Yonghe and Lan Chaoding rebellion in the middle and late Qing Dynasty, reached its peak in the social chaos of the Republic of China, and fell in the early years of the People’s Republic of China when the people were the masters of the country. The rise and fall of the clan for more than two hundred years is closely related to the change of social environment and the change of conquering the local society. While seizing the opportunities brought by the changes of social environment, the Duan clan has also been continuously accumulating and constructing itself. The Duan clan has been preparing for the development of the clan since it entered Sichuan. On the one hand, they constantly expand their economic strength through hard work and accumulation of land.On the one hand,it pays attention to education, supports education, and cultivates various talents for the development of the family. At the same time,it also actively establishes good relations with all social strata and provides various resources for the development of the clan. The continuous self-accumulation and development of the Duan clan not only ensured its own security in times of social turmoil, but also seized the opportunity to further become a powerful local power with local armed forces. As a traditional local family, the Duan clan flourished in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China on the basis of the feudal landlord land system and local armed forces such as the militia group Baojia. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, with the land reform movement and the construction of grass-roots political power in rural areas, the landlords and evil gentry of the Duan clan were criticized, their land property was confiscated, and the armed forces of the militia were disbanded. The clan organization quickly fell into decline and disintegration. |
