A Report On The Translation Of Rise And Fall (Chapter One To Three)

During postgraduate study,the author participated in the translation of the history book Rise and Fall commissioned by CITIC Publishing House,responsible for the translation of the Chapter 1,Chapter 2 and Chapter 3,including the Akkadian Empire,the Roman Empire and the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates.This report comprehensively reviews the translation practice,and analyzes the case based on the framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation” proposed by Li Changshuan,summarizes the problems encountered in the practice,explores the causes of the problems and puts forward corresponding solutions in the part of case analysis.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the background of the task,analysis of the source text,research significance and the layout of the report.Chapter 2describes the main contents of pre-translation preparation,translation process and proofread process;Chapter 3 introduces the theoretical framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”,respectively expounds the main meanings and internal relations of the three stages in the translation process,and emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and investigation ability in translation activities;Chapter 4 is case analysis,in which the author mainly uses the theoretical framework to analyze problems discovered in translation practice,and propose corresponding solutions.In this chapter,the author summarizes 24 typical translation examples and discusses them in detail according to the framework of“Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation” in combination with the characteristics of the source text.Chapter 5 is a conclusion,based on the achievements and shortcomings of this translation practice,summarizing the experience and discussing the professional qualities that excellent translators should possess.In this report,through analyzing cases,the author concluded that the difficulties in Comprehension mainly include background knowledge and text content;the difficulties in Expression include accurate translation of terminology,elimination of Europeanized Chinese,and cohesion and coherence of texts;the difficulties of Adaptation include amplification,omission and flexible translation.In view of the above problems,the author put forward solutions and improved versions of translation in the report,summarized the relevant experience,and hoped to provide some references for the translation activities of other history texts.
