As a typical urban literary genre, detective novel gradually rose and developed in Dickens’ s life. The crime, conspiracy, justice and other issues involved in the detective novel were in deep agreement with the writer’s creation.Dickens also showed great interest in it.In his urban creations,he absorbed the detective tradition and combined it with urban identity to give London controllability. This paper will be divided into three parts to explore the relationship between Dickens’ s cities and the creation of detective novels. The first part mainly introduces the environment and soil of the development of detective novels in the era of Dickens and the British detective novels in the generation. After combing the origin of detective novels in the era of Dickens,it will be found that the soil of the emerging British detective novels is in the city.Dickens was clearly aware of this. Therefore, the second part will focus on analyzing the particularity of detective tradition in Dickens’ s literary London, that is,detective’s city is a city that can be recognized and controlled.Dickens noticed the power of control of the detective in the tradition of detective literature, and this power of control helped solve the problems of chaos, randomness and crime in urban space. This part will focus on the analysis of the interaction and function of urban criminal environment and detective control energy in Dickens’ creation. The third part will focus on the analysis text of the posthumous work The Mystery of Drood and discuss Dickens’ transformation of the use of detectives’ control energy. This change is manifested in two aspects: one is the change of motive of persecution. It is Dickens’ first attempt to analyze criminal psychology with the help of detective function. The second is the transformation of the place, which reflects Dickens’ profound understanding of the fluidity of evil.Through the mirror of "the detective chasing the killer",Dickens’ ambiguous attitude towards the power of official control and the progress of modern urban civilization can be seen.
