Starting with the relationship between contemporary painting images and painting, this paper probes into the art works of American watercolor artist Rob Erdo, and emphatically combs his creative concept of image reconstruction and the formal language of watercolor creation. In contemporary painting, the relationship between image and painting has been controversial since the invention of the camera. Now,in the age of image,we create images based on images, and artists use and create images from new perspectives, this has become an inescapable trend for the plastic arts.Looking back on the development of watercolor painting in China, because of its history and small audience, the creation concept and ideology of watercolor painting in China lag behind that of oil painting or other painting categories. In contemporary art creation, artists began to choose images as the basic means of creation, how to achieve the balance and harmony between painting and images, this paper selects American watercolor artist Rob Erdo as an example. This paper discusses in detail its use of image creation techniques, creative ideas and artistic language. His watercolor works have a huge scale and have a more avant-garde consciousness of watercolor painting creation. When he turns the image material into an art work,he shapes the profound artistic conception with unique geometric form composition, abstract symbolic language and concrete scenery. The points, lines and surfaces in the picture show a musical sense of rhythm, and bold juxtaposition creates a warm fantasy effect, which is the outstanding feature of its watercolor painting full of artistic tension. The use of these techniques and ideas in watercolor painting plays an important role in promoting the creation of watercolor painting,so it is very important to learn from Rob’s creative methods of using images and constructing pictures in artistic form language.
