Material is not only a tool medium, but also a carrier that expresses the inner spirit of the artist’s wishes and emotions. In the process of creation, inner spirit is very important.Kiefer resonates the emotion of the work with the emotion of the audience through the material, and the material becomes the bridge of communication between Kiefer and the viewer.Kiefer’s works are very rich in themes. His works explore themes of war, religion, mythology, morality, memory and history. His works have strong symbolic significance.Kiefer shows his attention to specific historical events in his works. He hopes to arouse the audience’s memories of those special historical events,so as to face and reflect on history.Kiefer’s creation of mythological themes is inseparable from history,it is not just myth or history.Myths arise from history and play a role in history.Myths surpass history to some extent.Kiefer’s childhood experience made him feel passionate about "ruin culture".Most of Kiefer’s landscape paintings depict ruins and deserted places.Kiefer believes that ruins are both the end and the beginning, and everything goes back and forth. The second chapter narrates Kiefer’s special personal experience and the society’s reflection on Nazi culture at that time, and studies Kiefer’s creative clues. The elements contained in Kiefer’s art are relatively complex, but it mainly includes three aspects:history, mythology, epic, and ruin culture.Chapter Three explains the spirituality in artistic creation, studies the relationship between materials and spirituality, and analyzes Kiefer’s unique method of using materials in chronological order. The fourth chapter interprets Kiefer’s representative works.Through the analysis of the artist’s related books and interview quotations,it studies the material emotions, psychological implications and symbolic meanings of Kiefer ’ s materials, explores the spiritual characteristics and connotations of his works, and outlines his artistic concerns Significance of art history. The fifth chapter starts from personal creation, discusses the inspiration of Kiefer’s creative method and the choice and thinking of materials in his own creation.Kiefer pays attention to the morphological changes produced by materials in his works. His works do not simply use materials. While he depicts the material connotation,he also depicts its spiritual connotation. The characteristics of the materials used by the artist arouse certain memories and feelings of the viewers, make people have subconscious associations and memories, and resonate with the work. The burnt straw symbolizes destruction and rebirth. The material properties of metallic lead give people a heavy, melancholic and gloomy emotion. The weight of lead is Kiefer’s thinking about history and the future. The sturdiness of the concrete and the fragility of the tower imply the contradiction between eternity and the present time, and the image of the tower also symbolizes the difficulties of the inner spiritual journey.
