| With further English teaching research being carried out in China,the idea has been widely recognized by most English teachers that language is the carrier of its culture and that learning language is a process of learning culture.Consequently,culture teaching is becoming significantly important in the teaching of language.However,due to the influence of traditional English teaching,together with the dominant role of the college entrance examination,the current English culture teaching in high school exists the phenomenon of "Chinese Culture Aphasia" —although students have basic English ability,they are unable to introduce and spread Chinese culture in English.English education shall give priority to cultivation of talents with an international outlook while holding fast to Chinese culture.The neglect of Chinese cultural elements in English language teaching seriously hinders the development of students’ intercultural communicative awareness and competence,and ultimately affects two-way intercultural communication.Based on the theory of intercultural communication,the third space theory and cultural teaching-related theories,this survey focuses on high school English culture teaching and investigates the phenomenon of Chinese Culture Aphasia among 150 students and 14 English teachers from Taihu High School in Wuxi.Through questionnaire,testing,classroom observation,interview and textbook analysis,this research aims to solve the following questions:(1)What’s the status quo of Chinese Culture Aphasia in high school English teaching?(2)What are the reasons that cause the Chinese Culture Aphasia?(3)What measures are conducive to solving the problem of Chinese Culture Aphasia in English teaching in senior high schools?The results of the survey shows that the students’ and teachers’ mastery of Chinese culture as well as the ability of presenting it in English is far from being satisfactory.Hence,there does exist the severe problem of Chinese Culture Aphasia in high school English teaching.The reasons include the obviously exam-oriented teaching content and teaching methods,the insufficient culture knowledge and cultural teaching ability,the lack of balanced allocation of teaching resources and the deficiency in cultivating students’ awareness of Chinese cultural expression in English.Based on the above survey findings,corresponding suggestions are given to strengthen the cultivation of high school students’ culture awareness and culture ability so as to change the phenomenon of Chinese Culture Aphasia in high school English teaching.The suggestions are put forward from the perspectives of teachers,teaching evaluating system and teaching materials.This research needs to be further improved due to the small sample size of the subjects and the plain theoretical explanation. |
