Yun Ge,styled Shouping,also Zhengshu,the literary name of Nantian,also Baiyun Waish or Yunxi Waishi,etc was from Wujin,Jiangsu,who was a famous master of flower-and-bird painting in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.He was also called "Decent Sketches".In addition to following the traditional flower-and-bird painting techniques,Yun Ge creatively developed the boneless flower-and-bird painting method to a new level,making his painting style have a distinct feature.Together with Wang Hui,Wang Shimin,Wang Yuanqi,Wang Jian,and Wu Li in the early Qing Dynasty,he was called one of the "Six Masters in the Early Qing Dynasty.Boneless flower and bird painting has been favored and studied by more and more contemporary people for its fresh and elegant style.It was said that boneless flower-and-bird technique was originated from Xu Chongsi in the Northern Song Dynasty.It was recorded in the " Dream Pool Essays by Shen Kuo in the Song Dynasty: “The son of Xi follow the style of Zhuhuang,who didnt use ink brushes.Instead,he used color pictures,so it was called boneless pictures.” Since Xu Chongs age is far away from the present,there are few existing paintings and there is a lack of image materials which can be researched.However,Yun Shoupings age is close to modern times,whose flower-and-bird paintings have been passed down up to now and whose flower-and-bird paintings took Xu Chongsis style.Through carrying out bold exploration of his "boneless flower-and-bird paintings,considering the past as well as the present,and learning from time to time,it is found that his works is unique and creatively carries forward the tradition of " boneless flower-and-bird paintings.Yun Shoupings paintings have injected new vitality into Chinas flower-and-bird paintings.Thus,Yun Shoupings flower-and-bird paintings are the great ones that people who study boneless flower-and-bird painting cant miss to learn.Through carrying out in-depth study of Yun Shoupings flower-and-bird painting,this paper conducts an analysis on the origin of Yuns boneless flower-and-bird painting technique and on how Yun Shouping formed his own painting style after inheriting his predecessors.This paper analyzes the implied meaning of the objective selection and the composition of Yun Shoupings paintings,as well as the application of various painting techniques at each stage and the color matching among a variety of objects,which can provide a detailed reference material for those people who study Yun Shoupings flower and bird paintings like the author of this paper.
