Reproduction Of Aesthetic Values In Science And Technology Translation Under Translation Shift Theory

According to stylistics,English can be classified into literary English and English for science and technology.By comparison,science and technology translation emphasizes more on the information and logic of the text,and has its own aesthetic standards and values.The Theory of Translation and Aesthetics provides a new research direction in science and technology translation.This thesis makes a case analysis of the reproduction of aesthetic values in the E-C translation based on a typical science and technology text—AI Assisted Patent Prior Art Searching—Feasibility Study,which was published by British Intellectual Property Office in April 2020.This case study mainly deals with the reproduction of aesthetic values of the aesthetic object and the aesthetic subject.In addition,it will take Catford’s Translation Shift Theory and Liu Miqing’s Translation Aesthetics as the theoretical guidance to elaborate on how translation shifts are applied and reflected during the reproduction of aesthetic values of science and technology translation by analyzing relevant translation examples.Methods of case analyses and literature research are applied in this thesis in order to make clear the process of translating those professional texts about AI and patent searching,and to learn more about how these two supporting theories are applied to complete the translation analysis.Through elaborate case analyses,five conclusions are made to explain the process of reproduction of the aesthetic values of the translated text.(1)Structural shifts are applied most frequently to the reproduction of aesthetic values of both translation aesthetic object and subject.(2)Level shifts are more often applied in sentences with specific attitude or facts through using simple present or future tense,so as to preserve semantic information in terms of conveying the consistent aesthetic feeling of the source text.(3)Class shifts are frequently used in the shifts between nominal and verbal or adjective expressions or collocations,which may play a role in expressing corresponding emotional connotations,and reflect the aesthetic analytical capability of a translator to some extent.(4)Unit shifts are often applied to shifts between clauses and phrases to keep tone,emotional implications and meaning concise and consistent in the original texts and translation.(5)Intra-system shifts are usually used to find suitable terms or collocations during the translating activity.Therefore,based on the analysis in this thesis,Translation Shift Theory is believed to promote the reproduction of the aesthetic values of both translation aesthetic object and subject in science and technology translation.Through different translation shifts,the translation aesthetic subject is supposed to apply their subjective dynamics to ensure precise meaning and faithful logic in the translation.Therefore,the reproduction of aesthetic values of the translation aesthetic object can be eventually completed.
