A Report On The Translation Of Introduction Of Huazhong University Of Science And Technology (HUST) And Its School Of Management

With the advancement of globalization,an increasing number of organizations,including enterprises,agencies and universities aspire to become a member of this trend and gain fame internationally.Also,the Chinese government pays much attention to higher education and stresses the strategy of “Double First-rate”(including the first-rate universities and first-rate disciplines).In order to put the above strategy into practice,the universities and schools endeavor to market themselves and attract international students and prestigious scholars.This is a Chinese-English translation program report on the Translation of Introduction of Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST)and Its School of Management,which aims to facilitate the School of Management of HUST in its accreditation from AMBA(the Association of MBAs).There are 16,223 Chinese characters in total,and the author translated about two thirds of them,approximately10,800 characters.The document could be divided into two parts.The first one is mainly about the basic information of HUST and its School of Management,whilst the second one is about the information of the programs of MBA and EMBA,including their reforms and development.The paper mainly discusses the C-E translation of the Introduction based on Catford's Translation Shift Theory.Compared with other translation theories,the shift theory emphasizes more on the level of phrases,sentences and grammar,which is widely applied in the translation of information-oriented texts.As this document is a type of the official documents issued by the government,which emphasizes the informative function,the shift theory is adopted as the theoretical basis in it.To be specific,the translator employed level shift and category shift to solve the problems in translation.By analyzing the above two shifts,the author demonstrated the feasibility of the shift theory in translating thedocument.
