A Report On The Translation Of Science And Technology Texts From The Perspective Of Translation Shift Theory

With the promotion of educational exchanges all over the world,many universities focus on the development of internationalization.The International New Media Center of Tianjin University is responsible for externally promoting Tianjin University and enhancing Tianjin University's international recognition.The contents posted by the school's English website are mainly related to Tianjin University's major events,visiting exchanges and academic research and report.The role of translators in this process is particularly important.The quality of translations has a direct influence on the effectiveness of publicity.As a practical report on Chinese-English on the translation of science and technology texts,the selected materials are from the academic research section on the English website of the International New Media Center of Tianjin University.The translation report is divided into four parts: task description,procedure description,case analysis and summarization.Chapter One includes the description of the task background,the content of the text and the text features.Chapter Two outlines the task preparation,translation process and proofreading,and especially highlights the feasibility of application of Catford's shift theory into translation of concrete magazine.Chapter Three is the case analysis.Chapter Four is the summarization of this report which contains the gains and deficiencies in this translation practice.This report uses Catford's theory of translation shift as the guiding theory,and discusses how the theory applies to the practice of translation from two kinds of shifts: level shifts and category shifts.Taking into account the characteristics of science and technology texts,the report analyzes the differences between Chinese and English languages and their shifts methods from angles of vocabulary,grammar,sentence structure and others.The report,combined with the translation texts,sums up the specific methods of the application of level shifts and category shifts.
