Fyodor Kuzmich Sologub(Фёдор Кузьмич Сологуб,1863-1927)is a Russian symbolism, who was one of the most talented and important writers in the Russian Silver Age.The novel“Bad little devil”is one of his most outstanding works.Sologub is the representative of the older generation of symbolists and the epitome of symbolist novels. His creation is a complex and integrated system, which embodies the individual pursuit of artists at the turn of the century.Compared with other Russian symbolic writers,Sologub’s works pay more attention to the inheritance of Russian realistic tradition. This paper takes the work "Bad Little Devil" as the main research object, and uses the methods of narrative theory, text close reading, socialized historical and cultural criticism, biographical impression criticism and so on to explore the poetic characteristics of "Bad Little Devil" deeply. The research shows that this work, which was written at the turn of the century and the period of social unrest in Russia,is of great research value. The plot of the work seems simple on the surface, but in fact it is a symbolist novel with rich content and profound meaning.Sologub uses realism and symbolism in his novel to reproduce the living conditions of people in the complex surroundings and the real society at that time. The content of the novel is quite rich, including the theme of small characters, devil and death. In addition,he reveals the evil of human nature implied in the superficial life with such narrative techniques as carnival, fantasy and absurdity.
