Toshio Hosokawa is one of the most representative contemporary composers in Japan,a prolific composer with a wide range of genres, and he uses a lot of polyphonic techniques in his works to express the concepts of "line","time and space Toshio Hosokawa’s compositions use a lot of polyphonic techniques to express the concepts of "line" and "time and space",and the polyphonic techniques are used and extended in his compositions.Polyphonic music and polyphonic techniques have always had a very important place in music composition. With the development of the times, composers are no longer satisfied with the traditional polyphonic techniques to process their works.Since the 20th century, the use of polyphony has become one of the most important techniques for writing polyphonic music.Through the practice and innovation of composers, polyphony has been further promoted and developed, and applied to their own musical compositions, giving birth to various theories of musical composition, such as Ligeti’s "micro polyphony".Nowadays, our inheritance of polyphonic techniques is the only way to create music after the collapse of functional harmony and tonal music. How to use and develop it appropriately is of great relevance and value for every contemporary composer and music theory researcher. Therefore,it is necessary to study and explore the polyphonic technique.Toshio Nishikawa’s works have certain significance for Chinese composers who are also oriental composers and also compose with traditional culture, and the use of polyphonic techniques in his works has important research value for graduate students in polyphony. This paper takes Toshio Hosokawa’s "CHANT--for violoncello and orchestra" as a representative, and analyzes the practice and innovation of polyphonic techniques in his works from various perspectives, such as pitch, rhythm and timbre,so as to open up the thinking and to find out the role of polyphonic techniques in today’s composing process. The work is a reference for finding new ways of using polyphonic techniques in today’s creative process.
