| Although Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature is often regarded as the first literary history written by a Chinese,it has been studied in a fragmented and unsystematic manner. In view of this, the thesis is divided into four chapters, which provide a more comprehensive examination of Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature from the perspectives of its production and dissemination, the characteristics of the ’wrong style’,the view of literary history, and relevant evaluation. The first chapter examines the production and dissemination of Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature. In the midst of the trend of new learning and new politics,Lin Chuanjia became a lecturer on Chinese literature at the Beijing Normal University, relying on his profound knowledge of the old school, his spirit of maintaining the new and the useful, and his rich experience in running schools. In accordance with the classroom regulations,Lin Chuanjia compiled the lectures for the course "The Flow of Essays Throughout the Ages",which was pioneeringly named "The History of Chinese Literature",based on the history of literature written by the Japanese.Lin Chuanjia wrote his History of Chinese Literature in three months, drawing on traditional scholarly works such as the Siku Quanshu(General Summary of the Four Books),as well as critically embracing foreign works of sinology such as Sasakawa Seikuro’s History of Chinese Literature.Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature was reprinted in a number of newspapers after its publication, attracting widespread scholarly attention. The second chapter examines the ’mistyped’ character of Lin Chuanjia ’s History of Chinese Literature.Although Lin Chuanjia borrowed the title ’literary history’,the intellectual structure and system of his literary history is still based on traditional word and chapter studies. He places the ’primary school’ at the front end of literary history, focuses on teaching rhetoric as a guide to writing, and retains the tradition of writing’sutra, history, son and collection’.This book has been criticised for being’misconceived’,but it is worth acknowledging the effort to bring the traditional study of scripture and history, words and chapters, into line with the history of literature in a’misconceived’ way.The third chapter examines the literary historical perspective of Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature. The scholarly community has already found that the book is arranged according to the ’literary study method’ prescribed by the academy, and it is worth exploring further how Lin Chuanjia embodies the guiding idea of the’western use of the Chinese body’ in his literary history. The book’s sense of "western use" is expressed in the practicality of the work as a criterion for its value, with emphasis on practical subjects such as mathematics and geography. The chapter is based on the principle of "secondary school" and emphasises the principle that "diction and chapter" should not be neglected,so Lin Chuanjia borrows from Western literary history and teaches literary history in the form of genre combing on the basis of the traditional "essay stream differentiation theory".This is particularly valuable in the case of the ancient and parallel texts.Lin Chuanjia’s view of literature as ’the way of the world’ also provides insights into the political and religious functions of literature and the universal values of Confucianism, and his view of evolutionary history and ethnicity is important for the study of the national psyche of the time. The fourth chapter examines the evaluation of Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature and its value.Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature was well received on its first publication, but because of its ’mistyped’ character,it was criticised after the New Culture Movement for its conservative ideas and disorganised content. With the rise of literary historiography, the uniqueness and pioneering nature of this work was gradually discovered. The criticism of this book reveals the changes in the conception of literature and literary history.Wang Jianyu’s History of Chinese Literature,Jin Xianxiang’s Introduction to Ebonics, and Chen Zhu’s History of Chinese Prose have,to varying degrees, directly absorbed the content of Lin’s literary history, and this book has had a considerable influence on the production and writing style of Chinese literary history. In addition,as an early textbook for teacher-training students,Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature can still be used as a contemporary reference for its principles of educational usefulness.Lin Chuanjia’s History of Chinese Literature is a literary history that reflects the spirit of the times and personal inclinations,as it examines the layout, transitions and evolution of literary genres through the ages from the perspective of an essayist, views literature as a national treasure, and reveals lessons of rise and fall in literary history to enhance students’ national consciousness. This book covers the current subjects of Ancient Chinese,Ancient Literature and Writing in the Chinese Language and Literature major, making the links between the disciplines closer and inspiring for the construction of the Chinese Language and Literature major. |
