When I was a Chinese teacher in the United States,I found that classroom management in the United States is very important.It is not only the basis for the smooth development of teaching,but also an important factor affecting the efficiency of classroom activities and teaching quality.If teachers do not have good classroom management capability,they cannot effectively control students’ behavior,and teaching cannot go on smoothly.Novice Chinese teachers who first come to the United States have difficulties with the classroom management due to the cultural differences between China and the West and insufficient understanding of American students and school management.Many novice teachers will experience negative emotions such as distress,depression and self-denial in their first year of teaching,which affects the quality of teaching and the overall self-evaluation of teachers.Some Chinese teaching sites opened by Confucius institutes may even lead to the closure due to the improper handling of a teacher in classroom management,which affects the development of Confucius Institutes.The Cloverport District is the teaching site with the longest Chinese course in West Kentucky University.During the 13 years from 2008 to 2021,12 volunteer teachers and 5public sent teachers have worked here.The author selected three novice Chinese teachers who taught here from 2015 to 2018 as the research objects,studied the cases of classroom management and found that classroom management is prone to problems and novice Chinese teachers’ classroom management ability is insufficient in four aspects: classroom procedures,rule formulation and implementation,understanding of students and classroom environment.Based on the case analysis,the author summarizes that the factors affecting the classroom management capability of novice Chinese teachers mainly focus on the teachers’ personal internal reasons and external thrust.Finally,it is proposed that novice Chinese teachers need to improve their classroom management capability from the personal level of teachers and the level of teacher trainers.Novice teachers need to cultivate their own growth thinking,actively communicate and learn,pay attention to teaching reflection and strengthen their understanding of students.Teacher trainers need to strengthen the targeted training of novice teachers and provide a communication platform for new and experienced teachers.
