The 19th century was a period of continuous liberation, development and innovation of European painting art from the bondage of previous ideas. It was also an important period for the exchange and convergence of European painting art,the flowering of art schools and the pursuit of common ground while putting aside differences in artistic concepts.Throughout the history of art in the world, there are artists who have made great contributions to the development of art in every era,and Europe in the 19 th century is no exception. This article adopts the methods of investigation, literature research and case study to discuss this topic, and divides the article into four chapters to study two outstanding American artists of the 19 th century,Winslow Homer(Winslow Homer,1836).—1910)and John Singer Sargent(John Singer Sargent,1856-1925).Through the comparison of the similarities and differences between Homer and Sargent’s painting art,it is found that art has a close relationship with reflecting the national character and grasping the spirit of the times. In the first chapter, this article briefly introduces the life experiences of Homer and Sargent based on the time and social background of the two artists. The second chapter summarizes the similarities between Homer and Sargent’s painting art into three points.First, the works of art have the same characteristics as vivid, realistic and expressive;second, they are good at outdoor sketching and love the scenery of nature;Third, the change from authenticity to sincerity in artistic creation. The third chapter contrasts with the second chapter, and summarizes the differences between Homer and Sargent’s painting art through four small points.First, the different painting subjects;second, the different painting techniques;third, the different painting mood;fourth, the different evaluations of the world. The fourth chapter is based on the research of the first three chapters, taking the world’s different evaluations of Homer and Sargent’s painting art as the starting point to explore the reasons for the differences between Homer and Sargent’s painting art and the impact on contemporary art creation.Enlightenment.This paper compares the painting art of two artists,Homer and Sargent,to reveal the importance of grasping the times and national spirit in artistic creation. In the creation of painting art,in addition to the innovation of painting techniques, themes, and forms, creators should also lay the foundations of their works, close to life, and integrate contemporary culture and spirit into artistic concepts.
