A Report On The Translation Of Ann-sophia And The Sceptre Of Light（Excerpt）

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the novel Ann-Sophia and the Sceptre of Light by the Nigerian writer Henry Y.Madukwe.This translation project was obtained through trial translation information released by the Fiberead Internet Publishing Platform in 2021.The source text is a novel with strong literary and storytelling qualities.Translation Norms Theory believes that translators should make specific decisions between being faithful to the source or target language in the actual translation process in response to different variations in translation content and purpose.The Translation Norms Theory provides a theoretical basis for translators to adopt translation strategies flexibly,and this practice also proves the guiding role of this theory in the translation of literary texts.This report consists of five parts.Chapter One is the project description,including the background and requirements of the project,and the introduction to the source text.Chapter Two is the process description,including pre-translation preparations,during-translation and post-translation.Chapter Three deals with the guiding theory,in which three norms of Translation Norms Theory such as preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms are introduced and their application to the translation of this literary text is expounded.Chapter Four is the case analysis,in which the translation strategies and methods adopted are illustrated through concrete examples under the guidance of the Translation Norms Theory.At the lexical level,such methods as omission,addition and conversion of parts of speech are adopted;at the syntactic level,the methods of both syntactic linearity and reversing are adopted;at the textual level,it discusses from cohesion and coherence;at the stylistic level,there are use of Chinese idioms and four-character phrases,reproduction of figures of speech and reproduction of psychological and linguistic descriptions.Chapter Five is the conclusion that summarizes gains and losses of this translation practice and the direction of the translator’s future efforts.
