Reading is an important means for people to obtain information,and it is also one of the target skills that senior high school English teaching focuses on.English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 Edition)(“New Curriculum Standards” in short)clearly states: “Discourse is the main carrier of language learning,and teachers should use it as a foundation in lesson design and teaching.Project-based learning focuses on the main status of students in learning.It pays attention to the connection with real life,and the cooperative inquiry,negotiation of meaning between learners and the cultivation of their practical abilities.The application of PBL in reading class is not only good for sustaining students’ reading interests,and promoting students’ in-depth exploration of reading material,but also can improve the cultivation of other abilities and qualities in a cooperative learning and collaborative inquiry atmosphere.Based on the theory of scaffolding and Dewey’s learning by doing,this thesis discusses the application of project-based learning in senior high school English reading teaching.This research intends to solve the following three questions:(1)How is project-based learning designed in senior high school English reading teaching?(2)How is project-based learning applied in senior high school English reading teaching?(3)What are the effects of project-based learning in senior high school English reading teaching? It takes 70 students in Class 13 and Class 16 in a senior high school in Xiangtan,Hunan Province as the research subject,uses Module 6 in Advance with English as the teaching design material,and adopts literature,test,questionnaire,class observation and teaching experiment methods to carry out a 2-month study from September to November in 2020.First of all,the current situation of senior high school English reading teaching and learning is analyzed through students questionnaires,reading tests,teachers interviews,classroom observations in the early stage of this research.Then,three teaching principles and three teaching strategies are proposed based on the data and the theory foundation of this research.Later,the framework of PBL in senior high school reading teaching is designed and carried out.Finally,the application effects are analyzed from the aspects of reading tests,teachers and students interviews and students questionnaires.From the relevant data analysis through SPSS21.0 and Excel,we can see that students’ average English reading score has been significantly improved compared with that before the practice,and their awareness and ability to use reading strategies for reading comprehension have also increased.In addition,project-based learning can also be conducive to stimulating and maintaining students’ interest in reading.Its practical and participatory learning features help students improve their thinking skills,problem-solving skills,and build self-confidence in English learning.It is also beneficial to the cultivation of English comprehensive competence.All in all,this research aims to explore and innovate the current senior high school English reading teaching mode,and try to think about the effective ways of applying the project-based learning in senior high school English reading teaching,so as to gradually cultivate students’ reading interest,improve their reading ability,inquiry ability,etc.,and bring some inspirations for the future senior high school English reading teaching.
