The translation report is based on the translation of Mind Shift: How Culture Transformed the Human Brain,an informative text introducing and analyzing genes, mind and the working mode of the human brain.Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 which expatiate on the relation between three mental disorders(depression, anxiety and autism)and genes are selected as translation material. In the process of translation, the translator finds that there exists a large number of sentences with inanimate subjects in the source text. The author employs sentences with inanimate subject instead of personal pronouns to improve the objectivity in expounding scientific knowledge.Sentences with inanimate subject are common in English but rare in Chinese because of different modes of thinking.Due to the difference of subjects between English and Chinese, the translation of sentences with inanimate subject poses difficulty to the translator,so the translator chooses sentences with inanimate subject as the research object. The translator selects Complete Translation put forward by Dr.Yu Chengfa as the theoretical foundation and adopts four methods—addition, omission, conversion and transference in translation.Addition is practical for completing the information in the target language.Omission ensures a concise target text.Conversion and transference are effective in modifying sentence constituents and word orders.By applying the above translation methods, the translator aims to achieve the fluency and readability of the translation.Meanwhile, this report is expected to provide a reference for the translation of sentences with inanimate subject in the informative text and books related to psychology.
