A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Inanimate Subject Sentences In The Investigation Of The Loss Of 42 Containers From The Container Ship Ever Smart

The text selected in this report is an investigation report on the overboard accident of 42 containers on the "Ever Smart" container ship released by the British Maritime investigation Bureau.The investigation report summarizes and analyzes the causes of the accident.In the process of translation,the author finds that there are a large number of inanimate subject sentences in the text,and English inanimate subject sentences are a common language phenomenon.In EST,this kind of sentence pattern has compact grammatical structure,strong logic and objective fairness,so it is widely used in scientific and technological texts,which is quite different from the language habits of Chinese.When translating,the translator needs to adopt some translation techniques and make certain conversions of the inanimate subject sentence in order to make the readers better understand the original text.This report is a maritime text,and this translation practice takes the communicative translation theory proposed by Newmark as a guide to classify and translate the inanimate subject sentence in the text.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,the author adopts the methods of conversion,division and amplification to translate the report.In order to enhance the readability of the translation and reduce the reading pressure of the readers,translators can add personal subjects to the sentences with inanimate subjects,or translate the inanimate subjects into adverbials in Chinese.The translator hopes that the translation methods summarized in this translation practice report can provide a reference for future translations of similar texts.
