Since F.C.Müller-Lyer proposed to name the illusion after his family name in 1889,the illusion has gained widespread attention for its strong effect.Although F.C.Müller-Lyer’s theory has been formulated for 130 years,an avalanche of psychologists still attempted to elaborate on the mechanism of the illusion and obtained a pool of theories.Generally, some tend to believe these theories are from the sense stage, while some tend to believe they are from perception stage.According to all these researches, however, obtained results are distinct and even paradoxical even though the methods and participants have been shifted, which indicates that these theories cannot well explain the mechanism of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion.Behavioral researches were applied in past relevant cases, while the eye-tracking monitor is used as an auxiliary tool to both record data of behavior accurately and offer data of eye movement. In the Experiment 1,we conduct the eye movement research on the effect of length, direction and angle on the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion through changing these three variables involved.(length: 2cm,5cm;direction: horizontal, vertical;angle: 30 °,60 °,90°,120°,150°).In the Experiment 2,we conduct the eye movement research on the effect of length, direction and angle on the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion through changing these three variables involved.(length: 2cm,5cm;the number of cue points: 1,2,3;angle: 30°,60°,90°,120°,150°).In the Experiment 3,only one single factor was changed to explore the mechanism of eye movement brought by the visual illusion in graphics based on F.C.Müller-Lyer’s theory and the number of illusion rate.Through these experiments mentioned above, conclusions we get are listed below:(1)The illusion rate of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion is the same in the foveal region and the parafoveal region.Different lengths do not affect the judgment of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion.(2)The rate of illusion is affected when the direction in which the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion is presented is different.(3)The rate of illusion was also affected when the arrow angles of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion were different, with the highest percentage of illusions at 30° and the lowest at 150°.(4)Under the conditions of different presentation directions and the number of cue points, different arrow angles will affect the illusion rate of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion. The illusion rate of 150° is the lowest, and as the angle decreases, the illusion rate increases.(5)The illusion rate of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion variant is not affected by different lengths and arrow angles. The illusion rate of the F.C.Müller-Lyer’s illusion variant is lowest when the horizontal arrow is outward, followed by the vertical arrow pointing inward. |
