A Translation Practice Report Of Bidding Document For Substation Project In Myanmar Based On Translation Shifts Theory

Under the international background of economic globalization,economic and trade exchanges between different countries are increasingly booming,and the bidding markets at home and abroad are developing well.Many international projects must be procured through open and fair international competitive bidding.As the guiding principle of bidding project construction and the basis for construction companies to implement the project construction,bidding documents play a vital role in the whole procurement process,so the study on their translation is of great practical significance.This report mainly discusses the applicability of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory in the translation of bidding documents and the corresponding translation strategies and methods.As is well known that International bidding documents are usually written in English,and the strategy of translating such texts into Chinese attracts an increasing number of experts and scholars.Its content is strongly professional,full of jargon,long and complicated sentences,so the translation tends to be difficult and valuable.As a typical scientific and technological text,the translation of bidding documents should focus on comfortable communication and information transmission.The target text does not require one-to-one correspondence with the source text in form.Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory requires translators to convey the meaning of original content to the target language readers accurately at the expense of formal equivalence,which coincides with the principle of "content is more crucial than form" in scientific English.Therefore,the author believes that this theory plays a considerable guiding role in the translation of bidding documents.As for the strategies and methods of translating bidding documents,level shifts and category shifts under the theory can meet customers’ requirements.The translation material is from the "230k V Mawlamyine-Ye-Dawei Substation" project.Supported by the Translation Shifts Theory proposed by Catford,this report discusses the process of translation practice from two perspectives of level shifts and category shifts by combining a large number of cases.It analyzes the guiding significance of this theory in the translation of bidding documents and provides some reference for scholars in the translation of bidding documents in the future.
