In recent years,English picture books have played an important role in English teaching in primary schools.English picture books are also used by more and more schools as a high-quality teaching resource.The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition)sets the goal for the middle and lower grades of primary schools to understand,read,and tell short stories with the help of pictures.Therefore,how to combine pictures and texts in English teaching in primary schools is very important to achieve the teaching goals.English picture books have the characteristics of rich forms,bright colors,vivid images and standardized language.Because students in the lower grades of primary school do not have the basis for learning a second language,if English teaching is only limited to the text explanation,it is difficult for students to have an interest in learning English.English picture books are very good teaching resources.Students can understand the meaning of picture books by reading pictures,and they can also learn authentic English expressions,which has the effect of killing two birds with one stone.Therefore,if teachers can make good use of resources such as English picture books,combined with teaching objectives,they can achieve good teaching effects.This study takes S Primary School in Hohhot as the research object,and conducts a field investigation on the current situation of English picture book teaching in primary school.Through questionnaires,interviews and class observations,we can understand the situation of primary school teachers in English picture book teaching,find problems,analyze their reasons,and put forward corresponding improvement countermeasures.This paper mainly uses questionnaires and interviews to conduct research.The survey objects are all 13 English teachers in S primary school.From the formulation of education and teaching objectives,the selection of content and methods,the organization and implementation of teaching,and the evaluation of teaching.During the investigation period,the author made an in-depth observation of the English classroom of S primary school for a semester,hoping to fully understand the current situation of English picture book teaching in S primary school,and to find out the problems existing in S primary school English picture book teaching through the analysis of the current situation.The paper focuses on the following issues:(1)What is the current situation of English picture book teaching in S Primary School ?(2)What problems do teachers have in using picture books in English teaching in S Primary School?The following conclusions through investigation and analysis:(1)S Primary School takes picture book teaching as a regular English course in the school.In the formulation of teaching objectives,the main objectives are language knowledge,language ability,and thinking skills.In the selection of picture book content,teachers mainly choose stories.Teaching methods also focus on the use of questioning and discussion.The teaching planning of picture books is mainly planned in terms of semesters.The evaluation standard of picture book teaching is whether students can read or perform picture books.(2)The design of teaching objectives of English picture books in primary schools is mechanized,and the design of teaching objectives lacks multiple dimensions.The content selection of English picture books in primary schools is relatively simple,and there is a lack of hands-on participation in teaching methods.English picture book teaching lacks long-term planning.The staged evaluation of English picture books is not taken seriously,and the evaluation tools of English picture books are not fully used.Based on the above investigations,the author proposes some optimization strategies.After a more in-depth understanding of the current picture book teaching in primary schools,this research proposes a diversified and hierarchical goal setting method from the dimension of teaching goals.In terms of picture book cognition,from the perspectives of picture book types,mining text value,and style types,this paper deeply analyzes the important value of non-story picture books,that is,explanatory style picture books,and the corresponding teaching innovation ideas.At the same time,from the teaching management,to the construction of the teaching evaluation system,new thinking and feasible solutions are put forward.
