The Expression And Application Of Klimt’s Decorative Language In The Creation Of The Oil Painting Freedom Series

From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century,the art nouveau trend emerged from France and swiftly swept across Europe.In this context,Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and his advocates founded the Vienna Secession.It is the acme of his art career,and thereby earned him a reputation as Austria’s greatest painter.His artistic style was varying from period to period,and each period could see his unremitting innovations and breakthroughs.His extraordinary love and passion for art is the essential driver behind his great success.During the period of prevailing Vienna Secession,Klimt’s works presented the most prominent individual painting language characteristics,which were epitomized by strong decorative effects and symbolic meanings.The author is deeply engaged by the elements portrayed in Klimt’s works: diverse female figures,glittering golden color,exquisite lines,luxuriant symbols,a mixture of planes and solids,and well-designed ingenious compositions.On top of that,the artist was sophisticated in creating a distinctive and diversified art world,as he incorporated the spirits popular in that era and territory with charming characteristics of different cultures and arts.The author started the study by delving into the relationship between Klimt and the Vienna Secession.After understanding the historical backdrop and other factors,the author briefly analyzed the formation and development of Klimt’s artistic style,and probed into Klimt’s decorative language in painting from several perspectives.Ultimately,the author gained a wealth of enlightenment and inspiration and expressed the inner world while reviewing his/her own creative practice.This paper lays out four chapters to study the subject.The first chapter is a brief introduction to Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Secession;the second chapter illuminates the formation and development of Klimt’s painting style in a general sense;the third chapter analyzes the decorative language of Klimt’s paintings from five aspects: composition form,symbolic elements,colorific expression,material application and symbolism in decorative language;the fourth chapter reveals how Klimt’s decorative language have influenced the author’s creation of freedom-themed oil painting series and from the selection of materials and ideas to the performance and application of creation,finally get the harvest and feeling.
