With the development of science and technology,translation presents the characteristics of professionalism,and the proportion of literary translation is constantly decreasing.China attaches more importance to cultural exchanges.Moreover,literary works have their particularities so they can’t be translated by machines.Therefore,the translation of literary works still has a great development space in the future.In a House Unknown is a suspense novel with a lot of character dialogues.These conversations play an important role in advancing the plots and shaping the characters.Because mystery novels have compact plots and some dialogues imply deep meanings,the proper translation of the character dialogues is the key to the whole translation project.So the translator needs to analyze and summarize these dialogues,then selects appropriate principles and strategies for translation.The Conversational Implicature Theory focuses on context and the information that the speaker wants listeners to know.A speaker obeys or violates the principle,intentionally or unintentionally,which varies the meaning.Thus,the Conversational Implicature Theory has a strong guidance to the translation of this text.In practice,to solve the difficulties in dialogue translation,the translator decided which information could be exposed under the guidance of the Maxim of Quantity;the translator decided which tone the dialogue should be translated under the guidance of the Maxim of Quality;the translator translated the dialogue in accordance with the context under the guidance of the Maxim of Relation;the translator decided the order of the information under the guidance of the Maxim of Manner.Meanwhile,in according to the original text,the translator analysed the cases which violated these principles.Through this,the translator can convey the original meaning to Chinese readers.Conversational Implicature theory applied in dialogue translation provides a new perspective to dialogue translation in literary works.
