Abstract/Summary:
Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning,and vocabulary plays an important part in English teaching.Nowadays,vocabulary teaching in primary schools presents a single,inefficient problem.It is mainly teacher-centered English vocabulary teaching.Students just imitate and memorize vocabulary repeatedly in the lesson.As a result,students lose interest in vocabulary learning and are unable to use English vocabulary flexibly.Therefore,this thesis conducts research on the application of the situational teaching method to English vocabulary teaching in primary school.Teachers create relevant teaching situations according to the contents of teaching materials and students’ existing cognitive level,guide students to learn knowledge in the situations,stimulate students’ interest in learning English vocabulary,enhance students’ interaction in the classroom,and thus improve the efficiency of English vocabulary teaching.This thesis focuses on the following two research questions: Firstly,can the application of the situational teaching method to English vocabulary teaching in primary school effectively improve students’ vocabulary competence? The second is whether the application of the situational teaching method has a positive impact on primary school students’ attitudes towards English vocabulary learning.The research subjects of the study are selected from two parallel classes in Grade 5 of the primary school in Guiyang,Guizhou Province.One of the classes,Class Six is the experimental class,and Class Five is the control class.Before the experiment,questionnaires and vocabulary tests were distributed to students in both classes in order to know their situations regarding English vocabulary learning.During the experiment,the experimental class is taught by using the situational teaching method and the control class by using the traditional vocabulary teaching method.At the end of the experiment,the post-test was distributed to both classes,and questionnaires were distributed to the experimental class.The SPSS22 software was used to analyze the data collected during the experiment.The study found that the application of the situational teaching method to English vocabulary teaching in the primary school can not only stimulate students’ interest in vocabulary learning.More importantly,the application of the situational teaching method can improve students’ vocabulary competence and has a positive impact on primary school students’ attitudes towards English vocabulary learning.
