Abstract/Summary:
Antibiotics are the common antimicrobial medicines in our daily life, but their side effects are not known by the average people.Abuse of antibiotics can cause great harm to the human body and the society.People should increase scientific awareness of antibiotics. This translation practice has selected 12 news reports about dealing with antibiotic abuse from The New York Times as the translation corpus. It is hoped that this translation practice can raise Chinese readers’ awareness of the phenomenon of antibiotic abuse.Journalistic texts are concise and clear and are often written in simple sentences. But sometimes simple sentences cannot fully provide details and reflect the reporter’s attitudes,so parentheses are inserted to achieve vividness and concision. There are a lot of parentheses in the this translation practice. Some of the parentheses can be translated literally into Chinese, but the majority cannot be rendered literally. The three translation problems encountered in this translation practice are: the parentheses expressing causality are not logically explicit;the parentheses to supplement details are quite long;the parentheses for emphasizing tones have flexible positions. The method of manifestation of implied relations and the method of recombination are used to solve the problem of implied logical relations. The method of fusion and the method of postposition are used to solve the problem of long parentheses. The method of reversion and the method of conversion are used to solve the problem of flexible positions of parentheses. It is hoped that this translation practice can provide some reference for the translation of parentheses in news reports.
