During the process of internationalization, English-Chinese (abbreviated as E-C) news translation has become a major way for China to observe the world. The timeliness, objectivity, and preciseness of English news meet China's need to accurately acquire information from international community. Thus, in order to facilitate the Chinese people with up-to-date news of international development, it is of vital significance to translate English news into Chinese. In view of the irreplaceable role of E-C news translation in the communication between China and the west, the related study has attracted more and more attention from both home and abroad. The New York Times is a representative of high-quality and serious publication in the US, and boasts favorable credibility and authority. Hence this project report has selected 30 pieces of news published on The New York Times website from June 2015 to December 2015 as its research object. Then the author summarized major issues and difficulties encountered during translating practice and eventually put forward corresponding solutions to these difficulties. This project report firstly analyzed the linguistic features of English news, in terms of lexis, syntax, rhetoric and discourse. Then the author carried out enormous translating practice under the guidance of Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory, attempting to pursue equivalence at lexical, syntactic, rhetorical and discourse level. During the translating practice, based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, the author tried to not only convey the original message of source news, but also take the readers' acceptability into account, so as to endow the Chinese readers with similar reading responses and experiences. This report aims to provide valuable referential advice and methods for E-C news translation and also hopes to enhance the author's own translating competence through massive translating practice.
