A Translation Report On News Related To ISIS From The New York Times Based On Skopos Theory

The New York Times has long been considered as a serious and influential newspaper due to its impartial diction and bold report.In 2015,the ISIS terrorists' attacking Paris attracted the world's attention;later on more news about ISIS was published in the New York Times than before.There are many terminologies and implicit cultural information in ISIS news,which poses a great challenge to the translator.Even though many people have translated the news from this newspaper,there were not many of them who translated news related to ISIS,and there was no such a translation report based on this kind of news.The author first gives a brief introduction to ISIS.The characteristics of news related to ISIS are also summarized.Based on the translation of news related to ISIS,totally 70 terminologies have been summarized for translating similar news in the future.Skopos theory is used to guide the translation of news related to ISIS.Skopos theory requires that translation skopos determine translation action.In this translation report,translation methods and translation techniques below are used to solve the problems encountered on lexical level and syntactic level from the perspective of skopos theory.Literal translation method and free translation method,translation techniques such as conversion of word classes,addition and omission are used on lexical level,translation techniques such as division of sentence,conversion of voice and conversion of word order used on syntactic level.Moreover,examples are given to elaborate translation problems and how the writer solves them during translation.This translation report on news related to ISIS aims at providing terminologies,experience and references for future similar news translation.
