Lin Yunming’s Han Wen Qi and other selected ancient texts were famous and widely sought after by scholars in the early Qing dynasty. This book, which Lin considered to be his most intensive and longest-running commentary, concentrates on his strong respect for and profound knowledge of Han Yu’s person and writing. This article places Han Wen Qi in the historical context of Han Yu’s commentaries in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and attempts to explore and evaluate the characteristics and value of this book in a thorough and comprehensive manner through historical longitudinal and period horizontal comparisons. The book is based on the core idea of“Shen Li”,the unifying role of “meaning” in the production of texts, the historical background and the main idea of the text as the basis for commentary, and a comprehensive and meticulous examination of how texts are produced from and around meaning. The book also focuses on how the essays are developed, what paradigms they form, and what unique aesthetic patterns they present. The book focuses on identifying and revealing the background historical facts, the use of allusions to the ancient world, the main purpose of the eyes, the cultural context, and the particular writing style, with a view to thoroughly analysing and presenting the mechanism of the formation of Han Yu’s “Shen Li”.While most of the commentaries of the previous generation containing Han Yu’s texts were fragmentary and scattered, with little systematization between the subcomments on individual phrases and passages and the overall commentary on the text,Han Wen Qi integrates them organically, changing the fragmentation between“meaning” and “rule” in the commentary on texts since the Ming dynasty. The Han Wen Qi,however, integrates them organically, changing the fragmented state of“meaning” and “rule” in the commentary on articles from the Ming dynasty onwards. This paper will focus on the following six sections:The Introduction, which explains the reason for and significance of the subject, summarizes and outlines the current situation and trends in the study of Lin Yunming and Han Wen Qi,and briefly introduces the main points and methods of the study. The first chapter focuses on Lin Yunming’s experience in the selection and criticism of ancient texts and the production of Han Wen Qi,and how he gradually deepened his knowledge of composition and criticism during the five stages of his career: studying in a village school, seeking a career as a scholar, working in Huizhou, retiring from government service, and living in Hangzhou, eventually becoming a professional selector and critic of ancient texts and compiling Han Wen Qi.At the same time, the process of compiling Han Wen Qi should have been based on Zhu Xi’s Han Wen Kao Yi,with reference to the writings and conclusions of Xie Fangde,Wang Ao,Mao Kun and Sun Zong, among others. The second chapter places Han Wen Qi in the historical context of Han Yu’s selections & commentaries of the Ming and Qing dynasties, comparing it with many other selected commentaries in terms of the purpose, scale and characteristics of the selected texts, the arrangement and stylistic concepts of the texts, and the notation and style of the commentaries,in both chronological and common time,to gain a deeper understanding of the book’s role in understanding the stylistic attributes of Han Yu’s texts and revealing how Han Yu’s texts are unique in terms of their inherited traditions. The third chapter focuses on the evolution and application of the concept of “Shen Li” in ancient writing and art-making in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and discusses why, after its entry into the realm of essay writing,it gradually became rigid in the midst of the trend of “rule as writing”.Lin Yunming,on the other hand, inherits the core concept of his predecessors’ view of “Shen Li”,reflects on the shortcomings of his predecessors, and advocates the idea of meaning as the core of “Shen Li”,focusing on the complementarity between the main idea of the essay, the background historical facts and the aesthetic unconscious, emphasising that in The fourth chapter takes a systematic look at Lin Yunming’s “The Writer’s Mind” and its aesthetic qualities.Based on an analysis and assessment of Lin Yunming’s view of “Shen Li”,Chapter4 focuses on why Han Wen Qi,which regards “Shen Li” as the first point of commentary, focuses on such aspects as the context of the text, the use of ancient texts, the key to the syllabus, the context of the text, and the unique style of the text in its specific commentary practice. In this section,we will discuss how these aspects serve,in his eyes,to reveal the divine reasoning of Han’s text, and attempt to restore the grammatical system of the text that Lin presents through his commentary. The concluding remarks summarize the paper’s views and provide a general assessment of the value and distinctive features of Lin Yunming’s book Han Wen Qi.
