A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Freedom Circus（Chapters 1-6）

This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is selected from The Freedom Circus by Australian journalist and writer Sue Smethurst.By recording her grandparents’ fortunate experience of escaping to safety in the war,the author recreates the misery of thousands of innocent people caused by the war and their strong desire for peace and security.At the same time,it warns people in this new era to cherish peace and stay away from war.This work is arranged in chronological order,and the translator chooses the part “Before the War”（chapters 1-6）as the source text for this translation report.This text is biographical literature,and it is essential to fully reflect its literariness and historicity.After introducing the background and significance of this translation project and describing the translation process,the translator summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation process at three levels: the lexical level,the syntactic level,and the discourse level.The difficulties at the lexical level include the choice of word meaning and parts of speech;the difficulties at the syntactic level include the translation of long sentences and passive sentences;the difficulties at the discourse level include portraying of character’s mood and the implied information in cultural context.According to the difficulties above,the translator adopts corresponding solutions: first,the translator solves the problems at the lexical level by extending the word meaning and converting the parts of speech.Second,the translator solves the problems at the syntactic level by following the original syntactic order and changing passive voice into active voice.Third,adding modal particles and annotation at the discourse level are adopted to solve the problems.After completing the translation report,the translator has accumulated some experience,especially in the translation of biographical literature,and the translator has mastered the corresponding strategies and techniques.Meanwhile,it is hoped that this report can also provide some ideas for translators of the same type of text.
