There are two groups of contrasting powers in Northeast Asia. The Sino-U.S.-Japan-Russia great power group and North Korea-South Korea’s mediumpower group. The interests of all countries in the region are intertwined,so the competition for interests is inevitable. The competition among major powers has more influence on shaping the regional structure. When the two largest powerful countries continue to engage in competitive interaction, the regional competitive structure will gradually be shaped. Also their competition will squeeze the strategic space of middle countries and affect their strategic choices. With the rise of China in Northeast Asia, the power gap between China and the United States is narrowing. The United States’ containment strategy to China is constantly escalating, resulting in increasingly prominent Sino-US competitive relations in this region. The Sino-US competitive interaction has shaped the regional competitive structure in Northeast Asia.As a middle country in the structure,South Korea has important economic and security interests with China and The United States respectively. Therefore,SinoUS competition will inevitably squeeze South Korea’s strategic space and even cause it to fall into strategic predicament. In order to expand South Korea’s strategic space,South Korea actually "bet" both on China and the United States, choosing hedging strategy to blur its strategic position and get profitablity respectively. In the meanwhile,South Korea has shown a strong preference in the processmplementing the hedging strategy. The competition between China and the United States is flat, and South Korea is inclined to a balanced hedging strategy, which will benefit both ways through the active development of relations with China and the United States. When Sino-US competition is escalating,South Korea is inclined to follow a bandwaging hedging strategy,by following the US-South Korea alliance to prioritize secure security interests.
