Israel is composed of multiple ethnic groups with dominating Jews. The return of Jews from different regions and other minorities in Israel have made the social composition of Israel diverse and pluralistic. At the same time,Israel is also a deeply divided society, manifesting ethnic divisions within the Jewish population as well as opposition between Jews and non-Jews.In the Jewish community, there are divisions between Ashkenazi and Sephardic,so are Russian Jews and Ethiopian Jews. The conflicts between Jews and non-Jews are in Jews and Arabs. The Arabs are also heterogeneous, taking the form of Muslims,Christians, and Druze communities.Israel’s ethnic groups have wide differences in religious belief, cultural tradition, human capital and resource distribution, which leads to ethnic problems. It is mainly demostrated in three aspects: the unequal level of development among the ethnic groups, the conflict between the Arabs and Jews, and the identity dilemma of the ethnic groups. The dominant Ashkenazi, who are mostly members of Israel’s middle and upper classes, tend to live in the country’s central cities and have discourse power in Israel.Restricted by their own conditions and the process of assimilation dominated by the Ashkenazi,Israel’s ethnic groups faced economic, social and cultural inequalities.Israeli Arabs are opposed against Jews by their struggle for equality and democracy. The establishment of Israel makes both sides accept each other, recognize each other’s right to exist, and do continuous efforts for peace and equality in the future. However, the Jewish nature of Israel and the wider Palestine-Israel conflict affect the relationship between the Jews and Arabs in Israel.Although Israel’s official policy does not separate the groups, they tend to live together in their own group and maintain a group identity in a multicultural society. With the rise of the Sephardians, they began to challenge the dominance of the Ashkenazis.Russian Jews are also committed to maintaining their Russian cultural identity and improving their political and economic development.Ethiopian Jews tend to eliminate racial discrimination and maintain their own religious characteristics.Instead of assimilating into Jews, most Arabs still maintain their Arab identity. They maintain their distinct identity through separate Arab and Druze educational systems,Arabic cultural communities, and religious beliefs. The issue of ethnic groups in Israel has caused political differences, class stratification and social segregation, which has brought challenges to Israel’s governance ability, social stability and national integration.Faced with the problems of the three ethnic groups in the country and their influence, the Israeli government has realized the importance of solving the problems of ethnic groups for the stable and lasting development of the country. The state starts to take measures in education, economy, national identity and other aspects. However, these three major issues have been intertwined with religious and secular, and left-right contradictions, and they are difficult to resolve in a short time. |
