The United States is an immigrant country. In 2000,the Latino/Hispanic American population became the largest minority and the second-largest racial or ethnic group behind whites, and by 2020,the number of populations is more than 60 million.Hispanics are an important part of the American immigrant population.Hispanic voters are predominantly immigrants,so they prefer candidates and political parties that implement loose immigration policies, and this feature has also been used by successive candidates to gain more support.Unlike previous candidates,Trump has always advocated a comprehensive tightening of immigration policies. After taking office,he signed a series of executive orders that harmed the interests of Hispanic voters to solve the problem of illegal immigration in the United States, which was strongly opposed by most Hispanic voters. When more Hispanics were expected to fall to the Democratic Party,an unexpected result emerged:Trump’s approval rate among Hispanic voters did not fall but rose instead, which reflects a voting paradox, that is,why did trump, who advocates anti-immigration,continue to rise in support among Hispanic voters?By analyzing relevant literatures and data, this paper believes that there are three main reasons:the changes in the values and interests of Hispanic voters, the Republican Party’s political pursuit of Hispanic voters, and the lack of Democratic Party’s attention to Hispanic voters.First of all,the changes in the priority of values and interests are mainly reflected in the following four points:1.The religious beliefs of Hispanics have changed.More and more Hispanics have become conservative evangelicals, and they have gradually moved closer to the Republican Party in terms of values,so the vast majority will support the Republican Party more;2.Hispanic voters’ attitudes towards immigration policies have changed, and the phenomenon of the first comers rejecting the later ones appears within this group. The first comers believe that the latter, especially illegal immigrants, have harmed their interests and damaged their interests.social stability, resulting in the deepening of discrimination against this group by other races, and thus more willing to support Trump who advocates anti-immigration policies;3.Changes in sense of identity, more and more Latinos who consider themselves"Americans"and "whites",and their sense of national identity increases. They coincide with the Republican Party who believe in "America First" and "White Supremacy";4.Compared with immigration issues,Hispanic voters pay more attention to economic issues and give Trump’s political achievements.certain approval.Secondly,in the Republican Party’s political pursuit of Latino voters,Trump and his team have tried to win more Hispanic voters by paying close attention to economic issues, focusing on the religious beliefs of Hispanic voters,"revising" their anti-immigrant rhetoric, and trying their best to "discredit" the Democratic Party. Finally, because Hispanic voters have maintained stable support for the Democratic Party, the latter has no fear that they will fall more to the Republican Party, thereby focusing more attention on African-American voters, and finally in the general elections of 2016 and 2020,both Hillary and Biden failed to get more Hispanic votes than their previous Democratic candidates.
