| The United States is a multi-ethnic nation,in which ethnicity has been an important issue in every period of American political development. In the second half of the last century, the outbreak of the Civil Rights Movement promoted academia to pay attention to ethnic politics, and opened a new approach to study American political issues from the perspective of ethnic groups.Since the 1970 s,multiculturalism has been in full force in the United States, advocating equality between cultures and improving the cultural status of ethnic minorities. From the perspective of political practice, the new social movement responded to the rights demands of the vulnerable groups and helped them to fight for their rights and interests. However, since the end of the last century, ethnic relations have been deteriorated seriously in the United States.Multiculturalism gradually has deviated from its original intention to encourage disadvantaged groups which should obtain special identity dividends. In recent years, the United States has fallen into the deadlock of bargaining between different identity groups, and ethnic conflicts have occurred from time to time. The United States has been one of the main destinations for Chinese immigrants. In the 21 st century, the number of Chinese Americans exceeded 5 million, and the situation of overseas Chinese also changed accordingly. At present, the trend of minority population growth in the United States has been unstoppable. As the population structure of ethnic groups changes, the public policies and ethnic identity around ethnic groups also change quietly. In recent years, some events such as Affirmative Action in Education,Killing of George Floyd and SCA-5,have sounded alarm bells for the Chinese community, and there was no lack of ethnic politics in these events.American ethnic politics in the post-civil rights era has its distinctive characteristics, which mainly includes three dimensions: ethnic identity, ethnic action and ethnic interests.Ethnic politics is a political phenomenon in which groups with the same ethnic identity carry out collective political actions and safeguard group interests and rights. This paper introduces the development of ethnic politics, and analyzes the characteristics and trends of American ethnic politics in the era of post-civil rights. Therefore, the cases of Black Lives Matter and Affirmative Action in Education are selected for analysis, which is helpful to analyze how ethnic politics affects the survival and development of Chinese Americans. |
