China is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country.Religious issues are characterized by mass, complex, ethnic, international and long-term nature. In the early days of liberation,China’s religious beliefs were complex, with a large number of believers, and religion was still influenced by traditional feudal culture and imperialism to a certain extent. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, religions were faced with the problem of how to adapt to socialist society. In order to promote the development of religion in a healthy direction, the Communist Party of China has formulated many religious policies in line with China’s national conditions, and carried out effective religious governance.Studying the religious governance concepts, policies, and practices of the Communist Party of China in the early period of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and summarizing its experience, can both enrich and improve the socialist theory of religion with Chinese characteristic and provide lessons f or good religious work today. The thesis adheres to the basic principles of Marxist dialectics, and comprehensively uses the literature analysis method, the induction method, and the theory-to-practice method to study the five chapters of the thesis. The first chapter: introduction. This chapter mainly includes the rationale of the dissertation’s topic selection and research significance, the current status of domestic and foreign academic research on religious governance in the early founding period, the dissertation’s research ideas and methodology, and the dissertation’s innovations and shortcomings. The second chapter: theoretical and Practical Foundations of the Chinese Communist Party’s religious governance. This chapter illustrates the solid foundation of the Chinese Communist Party’s religious governance, mainly from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The theoretical basis includes the Marxist view of religion, the Leninist view of religion, and the Chinese Communist Party view of religion. The practical basis includes the party’s specific religious work during the Agrarian Revolutionary War,the All-out War of Resistance and the Liberation War.The third chapter: the historical background of religious governance by the Chinese Communist Party. This chapter mainly covers the basic situation and main problems of Chinese religion in the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The thesis firstly introduces the basic situation of Chinese religions from the perspectives of the number of religious sects, geographical distribution characteristics and believers;Secondly,it expounds the main problems of Chinese religion from three aspects: Buddhism,Taoism and Islam are deeply influenced by feudal culture,Christianity and Catholicism are easily used by Western forces, and some folk beliefs have a certain reactionary superstition..The fourth chapter: The main points of religious governance of the Chinese Communist Party. This section is the core part of the thesis.First,it introduces the CPC’s initiatives to purge imperialist influence from three aspects: removing imperialist forces from churches, banning reactionary religious organizations, and encouraging independence and self-management;second,it discusses the CPC’s policies and methods to strengthen the management of religious affairs from three aspects: guaranteeing freedom of religious belief, setting up religious work institutions, and properly handling religious land and property;third,it discusses the CPC’s measures to protect and repair places of religious activities, allowing the establishment of religious groups and organizations, and supporting international cultural exchanges. Then, the CPC’s policies and methods for strengthening the management of religious affairs are discussed in three aspects: protecting and renovating places of religious activities, allowing the establishment of religious groups and organizations, and supporting international cultural exchanges; Finally, the process and measures of the Chinese Communist Party in promoting the religious reform movement are described from three aspects: the "Three-Self" renewal movement of Christianity, the anti-imperialist and patriotic movement of Catholicism, and the reform work of Buddhism and Taoism. The fifth chapter: The experience and lessons learned from the religious governance of the Communist Party of China. This part first summarizes the four major experiences of the CPC’s religious governance in the early days of the PRC by combining history and theory: Correctly understanding the essence of religion is the premise;properly handling religious contradictions is the foundation;insisting on independence and self-management is the principle;winning the upper class is an effective way.Secondly,on the basis of the above experience, combined with the new national conditions of religion, the following enlightenments are extracted: bringing religious management into the rule of law, preventing religious infiltration by foreign forces, giving full play to the active role of religious communities, and consolidating the patriotic United front with religious communities.
