As the world’s largest comprehensive games, every Olympic Games attracts the attention of the world. The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games also attracts the attention of people and the media all over the world. It not only embodies the sports spirit of peace and unity, but also disseminates information about the history, geography and customs of the host country to the audience through a series of audio-visual symbols, which can show a full-scale cultural background of the country to the world from many aspects.Now,eight-minute performance of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games becomes one of the most eye-catching events. The eight-minute performance at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games is able to bring together the cultural essence of the next host country and to ritually disseminate the best and most attractive cultural connotation of the country to the world, which can make the natives and people in the world fully recognize the culture of the host country and can help to awaken people’s memory about their nations,to disseminate cultures and to gain cultural identity. This paper focuses on the eight-minute performances of the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games from 2004 to 2018.The methods of literature, semiotic analysis and inductive argumentation have been adopted.Based on the method of content analysis, the ritual communication and cultural identity of the closing ceremonies of the last 8 Olympic Games have been studied. The specific symbols and deep meanings applied in the eight-minute performances of the closing ceremonies of the last 8 Olympic Games have been obtained, which can provide the study of the common features of the ritual communication and cultural identity in the eight-minute performances with sufficient references.Through the analysis of the content of the eight-minute performances in eight games,it has been concluded that the performances in closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games are disseminated ritually on media by highlighting the traditional culture, using the color of the national flag, inviting the role model stars and so on.In such media communications, cultural identity is achieved through the display of humanities and geography, the use of national music and the narration of national history. Then the conclusion has been drawn that the following problems are not conducive to the ritual communication of media and cultural identity: the lack of proportion of sports elements in the 8-minute performances of the Olympic Games is not conducive to the dissemination of sports culture;the ambiguity of the belongings of the elements can ’ t completely represent the national culture;the symbols have not been fully accepted by all the people in the country;the showy and unsubstantial content has led to the shallow recognition of the works. In response to the above-mentioned problems, some suggestions are put forward: the construction of the content of a performance should focus on sports elements to disseminate sports culture;the background of elements should be carefully checked to realize the cultural identity of the audience;the selection of cultural elements should be based on a broad collection of public opinion to increase sense of identity of participation;the rhythm and content of the performance should be controlled properly in order to improve the dissemination effect;meanwhile, the host country should make efforts to find ways to enrich the forms of cultural dissemination and promote cultural identity.
