Objectives: In recent years, the mental health problems of middle school students have become more and more serious, and academic burnout has gradually become an important factor that cannot be underestimated that affects the development of middle school students’ mental health. This study will focus on exploring the specific mechanism of life events affecting academic burnout through emotional intelligence and rumination. Methods: In this study,602 middle school students from two middle schools in Henan Province are selected by stratified random sampling to conduct a questionnaire survey using four scales: "Adolescent Self-rating Life Events Checklist(ASLEC)","Adolescent Learning Burnout Scale","Ruminative Responses Scale(RRS)" and "Emotional Intelligence Scale(EIS)".Statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, independent sample t test,one-way analysis of variance,Pearson product difference correlation analysis, hierarchical regression, mediation and moderating effect tests were used for data analysis and processing.Results:(1)The academic burnout, rumination, life events, emotional intelligence of middle school students are not significantly different at different grades and whether or not only child, there are significant differences in grades(p<0.001).(2)After controlling for grade demographic variables, life events have a significant positive predictive effect on middle school students’ academic burnout;middle school students’ rumination has a significant positive predictive effect on academic burnout;life events have a significant positive predictive effect on the rumination of middle school students.(3)In the process of the formation of middle school students’ academic burnout, rumination plays a part of the mediating role between life events and academic burnout of middle school students. The direct effect and indirect effect are 0.187 and 0.215,accounting for 46.52% and 53.48% of the total effect respectively.(4)The moderated mediation model of academic burnout, life events, rumination and emotional intelligence was established.Emotional intelligence plays a moderating role in the influence of middle school students’ life events on rumination(β=0.075,t=2.105,p< 0.05);emotional intelligence plays a moderating role in the influence of life events in middle school students on academic burnout(β=0.076,t=2.628,p<0.01).Conclusion:(1)The academic burnout, life events, rumination and emotional intelligence of middle school students have significant differences in grades, indicating that grade is one of the factors affect the four variables.(2)From the regression analysis results, the more life events encountered by middle school students, the deeper degree of academic burnout and rumination; The deeper the degree of rumination, the more serious the academic burnout.(3)In the process of the formation of academic burnout of middle school students, life events of middle school students not only directly affect academic burnout, but also indirectly affect academic burnout through individual rumination, which plays an intermediation role.(4)Emotional intelligence plays a moderating role in the influence of life events on rumination in middle school students, and also plays a moderating role in the influence of life events on academic burnout, and with the increase of life events, compared with low-emotional intelligence,high-emotional intelligence enhances the predictive effect of life events on rumination and academic burnout.
